PILATES: A BRIEF HISTORY

Joseph Hubertus Pilates
1883-1967

Joseph was a sickly child and suffered from asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever, as a result he dedicated his entire life to improving his physical strength. He began studying body-building, yoga, zen, and gymnastics. Joseph came to believe that the "modern" life-style, bad posture, and inefficient breathing lay at the roots of poor health. He ultimately devised a series of exercises and training-techniques and engineered all the equipment, specifications, and tuning required to teach his methods
properly.

ABOUT THE STUDIO

Regina Radisic
Studio Director | Movement Expert

Regina Radisic is the founder and studio director of Studio 90° in the beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands, BWI. Before moving to the Caribbean from Canada, Regina was a dancer for over 20 years and incorporated Pilates into her everyday training since she was 16 years of age. She considers herself a ‘movement expert’ with a diverse background of Circus Art, Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique, Martha Graham, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Gymnastics, and many other forms of movement. Her curiosity and enthusiasm has driven her to explore and accumulate information from these other forms to refine her knowledge about the body and its mechanics. She is fully certified in Pilates, both in mat and equipment thru the internationally recognized Physical Mind Institute (PMI), since 2000. Shortly after her certification Regina had the privilege to mentor and study with Susan Greskevitch for 7 years and work for ‘Body Harmonics Pilates’ in Toronto, Canada under the tutelage of Margot Mackinnon. She continues to study abroad with senior anatomists Irene Dowd, Laura Allard and Thomas Myers. She combines the integral relationship that exists between core conditioning and body mobility, while still emphasizing muscle balance through proper stretching and strengthening. Her specific training style focuses on improving clients’ ‘body awareness’; therefore customizing their experience in accordance. Regina also has reputable experience working with special populations i.e., hip/knee replacements, scoliosis, sciatica, pre/post rehabilitation, pre/post natal, mom and baby, osteoporosis, arthritis, sports specific conditioning, ms etc. Since establishing Studio 90˚ in 2007, Regina has developed specialty programs for the community and the world at large. She is one of 200 faculty members in the world that is eligible to train people to become ‘Balanced Body®’ recognized Pilates instructors. She continues to conduct professional teacher training workshops, learning seminars for the general public and retreats for local/international teachers and Pilates enthusiasts.
